Supreme Court rejects Telangana plea on BC quota

HYDERABAD: The Supreme Court on Thursday declined to hear the Telangana government’s Special Leave Petition (SLP) seeking to overturn a High Court stay on enhanced reservations for Backward Classes (BCs) in local body elections.
The bench said it could not take up the matter since the case was still pending before the High Court. The apex court directed the High Court to continue hearing the matter on merit, independent of the Supreme Court’s earlier observations.
The court said the state may proceed with elections based on existing reservations, if it wishes to.
The Telangana government had challenged a High Court interim order staying Government Order (GO) No. 9, which provided 42% reservation for BCs in local body polls. The High Court had issued the stay on October 9. The state filed its SLP on October 13 and mentioned the matter before the Supreme Court registrar earlier this week, seeking urgent listing on October 16 or 17.
However, despite being included in Thursday’s hearing list, the Supreme Court refused to entertain the petition.
