Urban forest development under Nagar Van Yojana in Telangana

HYDERABAD: Telangana has received central funding for setting up six new urban forests under the Nagar Van Yojana, with the Union government releasing 70% of the approved amount for 2025–26, the state forest department said.

A total of ₹8.26 crore has been sanctioned in the first instalment for the project, according to Dr C Suvarna, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Head of Forest Force.

Funds routed through state forest agency

The funds will be utilised through the Telangana State Forest Development Corporation under the office of the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests. The scheme aims to expand green cover in urban areas, reduce pollution and provide healthier living spaces for residents.

Urban forests will be developed within city and town limits to help maintain ecological balance, improve air quality and support climate resilience, the PCCF said.

Focus on native species and public access

The proposed urban forests will prioritise native tree species and include walking tracks, resting areas and open green spaces. The facilities are intended to serve morning and evening walkers, children and senior citizens.

Approved locations

The six urban forests will be developed at the following locations:

  • Adilabad district: Mavala; Yapalgoor–II

  • Mancherial district: Indaram (Kotanpally mandal); Chennur

  • Medchal–Malkajgiri district: Yellampet; Chengicherla

The forest department said the projects would also aid rainwater conservation, biodiversity protection and temperature regulation in urban areas.

Officials said the Nagar Van Yojana would play a key role in positioning Telangana as a leader in urban environmental conservation.
