Telangana CEO seeks three-week SIR extension

HYDERABAD: The Telangana Chief Electoral Officer, C. Sudharshan Reddy, has asked the Election Commission of India to extend by three weeks the deadline for filing complaints and objections under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
In a letter to the Election Commission, Reddy said political parties and voters had submitted representations seeking an extension of the deadline.
SIR complaints deadline ends on September 16
The deadline for filing complaints and objections under the SIR is set to end on September 16.
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has also written to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, seeking a four-week extension of the SIR exercise.
Major political parties have expressed concern that failure to extend the deadline could result in a large number of voters losing their names from the electoral rolls.
Over 47 lakh voters have received notices
Election officials have said notices would be issued to a total of 92.88 lakh voters in Telangana as part of the SIR exercise.
So far, notices have been issued to 47.79 lakh voters. Of these, only 5.74 lakh have appeared before Electoral Registration Officers or Assistant Electoral Registration Officers and produced identity documents.
Political party leaders have expressed concern that lakhs of voters have not yet appeared before election officials because of problems with identity cards and other reasons.
