However, this incident comes after a previous fire mishap at the building, further fueling concerns about safety and construction quality. The incident is currently under review.
A Chunk Of Plaster From Telangana Secretariat’s South Block Collapsed On A Car, Raising Concerns Over Construction Quality...

Hyderabad: A video showing a portion of the glassfibre reinforced concrete (GRC) beam falling on a parked car on the premises of Telangana Secretariat on Wednesday night quickly went viral, causing panic among the staff and visitors.

Fortunately, no one was hurt as the car was empty. However, the roof of the car was damaged extensively. A chunk of plaster and concrete fell from the exterior wall of the sixth floor of the Secretariat’s south block. The offices of chief minister Revanth Reddy, officers in the chief minister’s office and the chief secretary are located on the sixth floor.

The previous BRS government spent a whopping Rs. 1,200 crore on the construction of a new Secretariat and this incident has raised concerns about the quality of construction.

Meanwhile, Shapoorji Pallonji and Company Pvt Ltd, the constructor of the Secretariat, has issued a statement on the beam collapse stating they did not compromise on the quality of construction.

“The GRC frame collapsed. Work for new cable laying and lighting as part of the regular departmental works is in progress. It is not a construction problem. Drilling was taken up for cables at some points. There is no problem with the structure. We are looking into the incident,” the statement from the company read.

According to the construction company, the drilling work as part of the ongoing structural modifications at the Secretariat may have triggered the beam collapse. They said only parts of the GRC structure were meant for cladding. However, it said they are reviewing the collapse of plaster of paris from the exterior wall of the government building.

It is noteworthy that a fire mishap occurred at the new Telangana state Secretariat building complex ahead of its inauguration in April 2023. The then Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee president and Opposition leader Revanth Reddy had alleged that the BRS government was ignoring the safety precautions in its hurry to inaugurate the new Secretariat on the chief minister’s birthday on February 17. While the Telangana BJP president Bandi Sanjay Kumar blamed the poor quality of work at the Secretariat as the cause for the accident.
