Telangana Becomes First State To Implement Sc Sub Categorisation After Supreme Court Ruling

Hyderabad: The Telangana government on Monday, April 14, 2025, implemented the Telangana Scheduled Castes (Rationalisation of Reservations) Act, 2025, becoming the first state in the country to do so following the Supreme Court’s judgment on SC sub-categorisation issued on August 1, 2024.

The Act rationalises reservations for 59 SC sub-castes by dividing them into three groups for education and employment. It was brought into effect on April 14, coinciding with Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s birth anniversary.

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy led the Congress government in issuing the Government Order (G.O. Ms. No. 33) and formally releasing it. The Act has been published in the Telangana Gazette in English, Telugu, and Urdu as Telangana Act No. 15 of 2025.

The Act received the assent of the Governor on April 8 and was published for public notification on April 14.

Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy paid floral tributes at Dr. Ambedkar’s statue at Tank Bund. Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, MP Anil Kumar Yadav, former MP Anjan Kumar Yadav, former Minister Motkupalli Narasimhulu, and others also paid their respects.

A Cabinet Sub-Committee meeting on SC Classification was held on April 13, 2025, chaired by Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy. The meeting was attended by various ministers and officials, including Sub-Committee Vice Chairman Minister Damodar Raja Narasimha, Minister Seethakka, and others. The G.O. was formally released at 11 a.m. on April 14.
