Telangana to levy road safety cess from March 1

HYDERABAD: The Congress government in Telangana will levy a road safety cess on new vehicles purchased from March 1.
The transport department has issued orders to collect ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 on new vehicles under the road safety cess. The amount will be collected at the time of registration.
Cars, passenger autos and other non-transport vehicles will attract the cess in the ₹2,000–₹10,000 range. The exact amount will vary depending on the category and cost of the vehicle, officials said.
Cess to apply only on fresh purchases
The cess will apply only to vehicles purchased on or after March 1. Existing vehicle owners will not be affected.
Officials said the cess is being introduced to strengthen road safety measures across the state. Funds raised through the levy are expected to be utilised for improving traffic management systems, safety infrastructure and awareness programmes.
The state government estimates that the cess will generate ₹270 crore annually. The additional revenue is expected to support road safety initiatives amid rising vehicle registrations in Telangana.
