Telangana to revive Ayurveda centres in prisons

Chanchalguda Central Prison in Hyderabad where Ayurveda centre will reopen

HYDERABAD: The Telangana prisons department plans to revive Ayurveda treatment centres in select jails, which were shut during the Covid-19 pandemic. The facilities will offer services to inmates and the public.

Senior officials are preparing to reopen the centres at Chanchalguda Central Prison and Cherlapally Open Air Jail in the coming days. Similar centres were earlier run under the name ‘My Nation Ayurvedic Village’ at Chanchalguda and Warangal central prisons, Sangareddy jail and Cherlapally Open Air Jail soon after Telangana was formed.

At Chanchalguda Central Prison, the unit generated an average monthly income of ₹3 lakh. The model was later expanded to other prisons.

However, the services were suspended during the pandemic. Though conditions improved later, the centres did not reopen as trained inmates were released and doctors moved to other assignments.

Staff to be hired, Kerala doctors preferred

Director General of Prisons Soumya Mishra has now decided to restart the centres. The department plans to provide Panchakarma treatment and general Ayurveda therapies at affordable cost.

Each centre will have one doctor, two male staff members and one female staff member. Preference will be given to doctors from Kerala. Supporting staff will be selected from among inmates, trained and appointed.
