Hyderabad: In a significant move to rehabilitate the Musi river oustees, the Congress government has issued a Budget release order of Rs. 37.5 crore.
The allocated funds will soon be transferred to the Musi Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (MRDCL).

Under the Musi Riverfront Development project, the funds will be used to support 15,000 affected families to relocate from the riverbed. Last July, Finance Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka announced a budgetary allocation of Rs.1,500 crore for the project.

After receiving the funds, the MRDCL managing director will release the financial assistance to the collectors of Rangareddy, Hyderabad and Medchal-Malkajigiri who will subsequently disburse the same to the 15,000 eligible households relocating from the riverbed along the 55 km stretch of the river. Each household is expected to receive Rs. 25,000 to cover the expenses related to relocation.

Earlier, the Municipal administration and urban development principal secretary Dana Kishore, who is also the managing director of Musi River Front Development Corporation, told reporters that as per the directions of the chief minister, they were going to provide rehabilitation of the evacuees of the Musi river front in double bedroom houses. The government has allotted nearly 16,000 double bedroom houses in different parts of the city to provide accommodation for the people who will be evacuated from the dwellings along the river.

The Telangana Minorities Finance Corporation (TGMFC) proposal to extend financial assistance of Rs. 2 lakh each to 138 affected families along the Musi river, faced a barrage of criticism from various quarters. The state government released Rs 30 crore for implementation of welfare schemes. Opposing the move, the social activists said that if TGMFC spends its funds like this then there will be nothing left for the BPL families residing in other parts of the city.
