Hyderabad R&B Department to Introduce Colour-Coded Alert System for Monsoon Response
HYDERABAD: The Roads and Buildings (R&B) department in Hyderabad will implement a colour-coded alert system across the state. The system will improve monsoon preparedness and flood response.
The department will use rainfall intensity to trigger alerts. A green alert will require routine monitoring. A yellow alert will require assistant executive engineers (AEEs) to inspect vulnerable stretches. They will also ensure contractors are ready for emergency repairs.
During an orange alert, AEEs will stay in the field. Executive engineers will supervise operations and coordinate response work.
When rainfall exceeds 204 mm, authorities will declare a red alert. At that stage, assistant engineers, AEEs, and executive engineers will remain on duty round the clock. They will coordinate relief work and report conditions to senior officials.
R&B Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy directed officials to maintain uninterrupted road connectivity. He also asked them to identify alternative routes in advance. This will help avoid traffic disruption during floods.
The minister said the department has issued a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for monsoon preparedness and flood response. The SOP aims to reduce damage to roads, bridges, and culverts. It also ensures quick assistance during emergencies.
He said, “The department is fully geared up to meet the challenges of the monsoon season.”
Officials will stay on alert from June to October. They will keep emergency equipment ready. They will also identify flood-prone stretches and monitor them continuously.
The department will install warning boards and open diversion routes without delay. Officials will also take immediate decisions on emergency repair works to protect public safety.
The minister added that the R&B Headquarters control room in Hyderabad will operate 24×7 during the monsoon season. It will coordinate monitoring and response activities.
