Telangana reserves 85% PG medical management quota seats for locals

TELANGANA: The Telangana government has approved 85% reservation for local students in Postgraduate (PG) Medical Management Quota–1 (MQ–1) seats in private medical colleges.
So far, these MQ–1 seats were filled under the All India category, open to candidates from across the country. Under the new policy, 85% of these seats will now be earmarked for Telangana students, with the remaining 15% open to All India candidates.
Decision fulfils decade-old demand
The decision, taken by Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy after a representation from Health Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha, addresses a long-pending demand from Telangana’s medical community. For years, local doctors and students have sought greater access to PG seats, citing the limited number of government quota seats and the high fees in private colleges.
Following the Chief Minister’s approval, the Health Secretary has been directed to issue a Government Order (G.O.) formalising the 85% local quota.
318 PG medical and 70 dental seats to benefit Telangana students
Each year, the policy will benefit around 318 PG medical and 70 PG dental seats, which will now be reserved for local students. Until now, nearly 60% of these seats were being taken by non-local candidates.
Officials said the move will expand postgraduate opportunities for Telangana’s medical graduates and help strengthen the State’s healthcare system by ensuring more locally trained doctors remain in service within the State.
Health Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha said, “This is a historic and long-awaited decision that fulfils the dreams of thousands of Telangana medicos. For years, our students faced a disadvantage in PG admissions due to limited seats and All India competition. With this reform, Telangana’s young doctors will get more opportunities. I thank Chief Minister Revanth Reddy for taking this pro-student, pro-Telangana decision that will empower our future specialists and strengthen the health sector.”
