Telangana imposes 60-day ban on Paraquat citing health risks

HYDERABAD: The Agriculture and Cooperation Department has imposed a 60-day ban on the chemical pesticide Paraquat in Telangana. The move follows concerns over its impact on human and animal health.
The department issued the notification on March 31, 2026. It banned the sale, stock, distribution, manufacture, and use of Paraquat and its formulations with immediate effect.
The government took this decision after receiving feedback and reports from multiple sources. These reports highlighted the harmful effects of Paraquat on public health and livestock.
Officials said the pesticide poses risks to both humans and animals. They added that the ban aims to protect public health and ensure farmers’ safety.
The government issued the order under Section 27 of the Insecticides Act, 1968. This law allows authorities to regulate or prohibit insecticides in the public interest.
Officials confirmed that the ban will remain in force for 60 days. During this period, authorities will review the safety of the pesticide.
