HYDERABAD: The Telangana government has decided to observe the birth and death anniversaries of late Panduga Sayanna Mudiraj as state functions every year.

According to Government Order Rt.No.1217 issued by the General Administration (Poll.B) Department on August 20, Sayanna’s birth anniversary will be observed on October 22 and his death anniversary on December 10.

The order said all district collectors have been asked to observe both occasions as state functions every year.

The Backward Classes Welfare Department has been designated as the nodal department for the observances. It has been directed to take further necessary action and meet the expenditure from its budget.

The order was issued by Chief Secretary to Government Sanjay Jaju on behalf of the Governor of Telangana.

The government decision follows a note submitted by the Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister on August 18.

Panduga Sayanna is widely identified in public accounts as a folk hero associated with Telangana and the Mudiraj community. Recent reports have referred to him as a 19th-century figure who opposed feudal oppression and was associated with the cause of poor and marginalised communities.
