Telangana orders demolition of Marri Rajasekhar Reddy institutions

Hyderabad: A demolition notice has been issued to educational institutions owned by Marri Rajasekhar Reddy, the BRS MLA from Malkajgiri and son-in-law of former minister Mallareddy, for encroaching on lake beds, according to the Telangana Revenue Department.

The Marri Laxman Reddy Institute of Technology and the Institute of Aeronautical Engineering are located within the Chinna Damera Cheruvu in Dundigal Village, Gandimaisamma-Dundigal Mandal. They occupy a total area of about 8 acres and 24 guntas of land.

The demolition notice, issued under Section 23 of the Telangana Water, Land and Trees Act, 2002, and relevant sections of the Telangana (TA) Irrigation Act, 1357 Fasli, requires the removal of the illegal structures within seven days of receiving the notice. Failure to comply will lead to further legal action by the authorities.

This action was taken following a joint investigation in response to a High Court directive, which was prompted by a writ petition (W.P. No. 14728 of 2007) submitted by Anil C. Dayakar. The petition focused on unauthorised constructions in 13 tank bed areas in Hyderabad and the former Ranga Reddy District. The main purpose was to stop further encroachment and protect water resources.

The District Collector of Medchal-Malkajgiri informed that the court has mandated a thorough status report on the lake beds and encroachments. Additionally, the court has directed the authorities to mark the lakes’ full tank levels (FTL), define boundaries, and protect the ecosystems.

The notice details the findings of a joint inspection of Chinna Damera Cheruvu in Dundigal Village, which revealed encroachments on the lake’s buffer areas. The Collector has been directed to ensure the removal of these structures within the stipulated timeframe or face necessary actions under the relevant legal provisions.
