Telangana sees sharp drop in NHM funds for 2025–26

HYDERABAD: Telangana received Rs 1,110.43 crore under the National Health Mission (NHM) in 2024-25. However, in 2025-26, funds sharply declined, with a provisional release of Rs 240.14 crore up to October 31, according to data revealed in Lok Sabha. The Union Health Ministry disclosed details of Central funds allocated to Telangana under key healthcare schemes, but its response to questions on alleged state mismanagement and critical faculty vacancies remained unanswered.

In a written reply to a starred question by Godam Nagesh, Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda tabled a statement outlining the financial releases for the last two fiscal years.

The National Health Mission (NHM) provides technical and financial support to States and Union Territories to strengthen healthcare systems. Approvals are granted based on proposals submitted in the Programme Implementation Plan, taking into account each State or Union Territory’s resource envelope and existing norms. Fund releases under NHM must comply with the guidelines set by the Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance.

According to the data, Telangana received Rs 1,110.43 crore under NHM in 2024-25 and Rs 240.14 crore provisionally for 2025-26 (up to October 31).

Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri-Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) is a centrally sponsored scheme and costs are shared between Central and State Governments as per the existing policy of the scheme. The ratio of Central share to State share in the State of Telangana is 60:40.

For Ayushman Bharat-PMJAY, allocations were Rs 218.29 crore in 2024-25 and Rs 56.85 crore so far in 2025-26, with funds set aside for hospital claim settlements.
