Telangana may see weaker monsoon as El Niño influence grows

HYDERABAD: Telangana may receive lower-than-usual monsoon rainfall in 2026, according to an updated seasonal outlook that forecasts the impact of a strong El Niño pattern.
The outlook estimates a mixed monsoon season, with about 50% chances of normal rainfall and 50% chances of deficit rainfall. It suggests that rainfall this year could be lower than the levels recorded during the past five to six years and may resemble the monsoon pattern seen in 2018.
The forecast indicates that June and July are likely to receive normal rainfall. However, rainfall is expected to decline during the latter part of the season, with August and September projected to record below-normal precipitation.
Regional variation expected
The outlook says South Telangana and North Telangana districts could be the most affected by rainfall deficits. In contrast, central Telangana districts are expected to receive comparatively better rainfall during the season.
For Hyderabad, rainfall is projected to remain in the normal to slightly below-normal range.
Monsoon onset likely on schedule
The forecast expects the southwest monsoon to arrive on time, with onset conditions likely during the second week of June.
While the outlook does not predict a severe drought-like situation similar to 2014-15, it advises caution, noting that rainfall may fall short of the levels experienced in 2025.
Advisory for farmers and residents
The outlook recommends water conservation measures and careful crop planning, particularly in areas expected to face rainfall deficits.
