Hackers seize Telangana ministers’ WhatsApp groups via fake SBI links

HYDERABAD: Cybercrime teams in Telangana have launched an inquiry after several WhatsApp media groups of state ministers were hacked through malicious links shared in the name of the State Bank of India’s Know Your Customer update.
Fake SBI APK files used to take control of phones
Officials said cybercriminals circulated APK files in WhatsApp groups of ministers and journalists, asking them to update their Aadhaar details. Once opened, the files allegedly allowed hackers to take control of the victims’ phones.
Several media groups, Chief Minister’s Office groups, Deputy CMO groups and the official WhatsApp groups of multiple ministers were reportedly compromised. Messages also circulated claiming that the phones of ministers’ public relations officers and several journalists had been accessed.

Cybercrime police issue safety advisory
The breaches spread widely on social media on Sunday, prompting cybercrime police to respond and secure the compromised groups.
Police advised users not to open any APK file received under the pretext of SBI KYC or Aadhaar updates. “Do not open unknown APK files under any circumstances,” officers said.
Officials urge heightened caution
Investigators said hackers targeted WhatsApp groups systematically by impersonating a trusted institution. Police urged users to verify any update request directly through official websites or mobile applications.
