MBBS Aspirants Get a Boost as Telangana Proposes Seat Expansion
HYDERABAD: The Directorate of Medical Education (DME) has proposed a major increase in undergraduate (UG), postgraduate (PG), and super-speciality seats in government medical colleges across Telangana. Four government medical colleges have also applied for 110 additional MBBS seats and 465 postgraduate seats.
Several private medical colleges, especially in Hyderabad, have sought permission to increase UG and PG intake to meet the rising demand for medical education.
The move follows recent reforms by the National Medical Commission (NMC). Earlier this year, the commission removed the 150-seat cap for MBBS courses in medical colleges. It also scrapped the norm that limited states and Union Territories to 100 MBBS seats per 10 lakh population.
NMC Teams Inspect Medical Colleges
Officials have already submitted applications for seat enhancement. NMC inspection teams have started physical verification of government medical colleges.
The teams have completed inspections at the government medical colleges in Siddipet and Mahbubnagar. Officials expect the teams to submit digital reports within two months.
“NMC has encouraged colleges with adequate faculty and infrastructure to apply for additional seats. Based on this, we submitted proposals for UG, PG, and super-speciality courses,” a senior official said.
Colleges Plan Higher Intake
Under the UG expansion proposal, Government Medical College, Mahbubnagar, and Government Medical College, Siddipet, have requested 25 additional seats each. Their annual intake would increase from 175 to 200 seats.
Government Medical College, Adilabad, and Government Medical College, Nizamabad, have applied for 30 additional seats each. Their intake would rise from 120 to 150 seats.
Inspection teams conducted detailed checks during their visits. They reviewed outpatient and inpatient services, infrastructure, workload, faculty strength, staffing levels, departmental performance, hostel facilities, birth and death records, and statutory registers.
Officials believe the proposed expansion will create more opportunities for medical students and strengthen Telangana’s medical education system.
