Telangana MBBS Admissions 2026: 9,550 Seats Boost Chances for Local Students
HYDERABAD: Telangana students have a stronger chance of securing MBBS admissions this year after the state increased its medical seats to 9,550, Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences (KNRUHS) Vice Chancellor Dr K. Ramesh Reddy said on Tuesday.
He urged students to ignore misinformation about admissions circulating on social media. He also said NEET UG 2026 counselling is likely to begin in the first week of August.
KNRUHS is preparing to start NEET UG 2026 web counselling. Before filling their web options, students should visit colleges to assess facilities and make informed choices.
“Many students realise they know very little about a college after joining it. I advise students to visit at least three colleges. They should interact with students and faculty and check the infrastructure, hostel facilities and academic environment. They should also keep alternative college choices ready,” Dr Ramesh Reddy told reporters.
Local ranks before counselling
Dr Ramesh Reddy said students should not trust social media posts claiming to predict seat allotments.
“Some posts claim to predict admissions, but students should not believe them. Counselling follows a fixed protocol, and no institution can allot seats outside that process,” he said.
The National Testing Agency is expected to send the NEET UG merit list to KNRUHS shortly. The university will release local ranks this week. It will then conduct certificate and caste verification before starting web counselling for state quota seats.
Over 6,100 seats under convenor quota
Of Telangana’s 9,550 MBBS seats, 6,159 are under the convenor quota. Another 1,729 seats fall under Category B, 781 under Category C (NRI), 625 under the All India Quota and 203 under the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) quota.
The state has also reserved 53 seats at ESI Medical College, Sanathnagar, for children of insured employees. Another seven seats at Government Medical College, Ramagundam, are reserved for children of Singareni Collieries employees.
The seat count does not include 200 MBBS seats at Malla Reddy Institute of Medical Sciences, which comes under Malla Reddy Vishwavidyapeeth, a deemed-to-be university.
Dr Ramesh Reddy said KNRUHS is strengthening its mentor system in medical and nursing colleges to prevent ragging and improve student welfare.
Each mentor will guide a group of students. The university has directed principals to hold monthly mentor meetings and ensure mentors stay in regular contact with students, offer guidance and address their concerns.
