Telangana losing Rs. 5 crores daily to cybercrimes, warns Cyber Security Bureau

Hyderabad: The Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) has highlighted the alarming increase in cybercrime incidents, with residents in the state losing approximately 5 crore rupees daily due to cyber frauds. A substantial portion of these losses, about 4 crore rupees, is attributed to criminals located abroad. The TGCSB expressed concern over the rising number of victims, many of whom are educated individuals.
In response, the Telangana Cyber Security Bureau held a Cyber Awareness Session on Digital Arrest Frauds as part of Cyber Awareness Month in January 2025. The event took place on 19 January 2025 at the Rajapushpa Green Day Club House, Tellapur. It was attended by senior police officials from TGCSB, who provided important insights into preventing digital frauds.
The session saw active participation from members of Residents Welfare Societies (RWS) from the western part of Hyderabad, who joined in raising awareness about the dangers of digital fraud.
Speaking with the Hyderabad Mail, Ramana Eshwaragari, president of the Tellapur Neighborhood Association (TeNA), emphasized the importance of vigilance and urged residents not to fall for easy money schemes or share confidential information with unknown individuals. He also reminded them to report cybercrime incidents promptly via the official portals or by visiting police stations.
One particular concern addressed during the event was the growing threat of Digital Arrest Scams. In these scams, fraudsters impersonate law enforcement officials and falsely accuse victims of being involved in criminal activities such as money laundering or drug trafficking. They create a sense of urgency, often threatening arrest unless the victim transfers money to avoid a fabricated legal action. The scammers use fake documents, such as FIRs or arrest warrants, and may even conduct video calls to appear more convincing.
The TGCSB shared tips on how to protect oneself from such scams:
• Verify unknown calls and remain calm before reacting.
• Never share personal information, OTPs, or credentials with strangers.
• Report suspicious activity immediately to authorities.
Citizens are encouraged to report fraud incidents through the Cyber Crime Portal (cybercrime.gov.in) or the toll-free number 1930. To aid investigations, it is also recommended that any evidence, such as communication and transaction details, be preserved.
Key officials, including Cyber Security Department DSP Surya Prakash, Harikishan, KVN Prasad, and Sangareddy Saver Security DSP Venugopal, attended the event.
The TGCSB and Telangana residents are working together to combat cybercrimes and protect the public from digital fraud.
