Telangana honored as best state for organ donation, NIMS, Osmania and Gandhi leads the operations

Telangana Leads Organ Donation

Hyderabad: Telangana has been recognized as the leading state in organ donation across the country. boasting a donation rate of 5.48 per million population (pmp) compared to the national average of 0.8 pmp for 2023. The government hospitals in the city-NIMS, Osmania and Gandhi Hospitals lead the transplantation operation with 550 operations in the last eleven years. The Ministry of Health and Family welfare (H&FW) presented an award to the state on Saturday.

In the last seven months 421 Jeevandan operations were commenced in the state exceeding the halfway mark with 58 percent of the number of organ transplants of last year 729 cases. Jeevandan Cadaver transplantation programme is a flagship programme of the State started in the year 2012. The Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) is the Appropriate Authority for Cadaver Transplantation (AACT). As of today 40, hospitals in Telangana are permitted to carry out cadaver transplantation including NIMS, Osmania and Gandhi Hospitals.

According to the Telangana Health department the statistics, “Since the establishment of Jeevandan programme, 5541 organs and tissues have been retrieved from 1465 Cadaveric donors, and 550 organ transplantations are done free of cost under Aarogyasri Scheme of Telangana state”.

Further as per the latest donation rate of Telangana for the year 2023 is 5.48 per million population (pmp), whereas India’s average organ donation rate for the year 2023 is 0.8 pmp.

National awards function held by the Ministry of H&FW on Saturday on the occasion of 14th Indian Organ Donation Day has recognized Telangana as the Best State/ Best State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO) and presented the award. The award was presented by Anupriya Patel, Minister of State for H&FW and Chemical and Fertilizers, Government of India(Gol) and Dr. Vinod K.Paul, Member (Health), NITI Ayog.

“Jeevandan is also honoring each and every donor family on National Organ Donation Day. 143 families were honored on 2nd Aug 2024 by Jeevandan at Gandhi Medical College Auditorium”,read an official note released by the Health, Medical, Family welfare department of Telangana.
