Telangana junior doctors continue strike despite SC appeal

Hyderabad: Despite the Supreme Court’s intervention and a nationwide call to end strikes, Telangana Junior Doctors Association (TJUDA) reiterated that it will continue the strike until it gets assurance from the government. The association has issued a statement demanding written assurance from the government that basic safety and security measures will be implemented within two weeks across all medical colleges and hospitals in Telangana.
In a statement released by TJUDA said, “On behalf of Telangana JUDA, we are immensely thankful to the Supreme Court of India’s decision to take up Dr. Abhaya’s case as Suo-moto and appreciate the CBI for its involvement in the investigation. We strongly believe that the Chief Justice of India will ensure justice is delivered to Dr.Abhaya. We T JUDA will be closely monitoring the Supreme court proceedings”.
However, the Telangana Junior Doctor’s Association will be continuing the strike as safety and security issues of the state have not been addressed yet.
As per the directive of the Supreme Court We demand a written assurance from the government that the basic safety and security issues across medical colleges and hospitals in Telangana. shall be addressed in 2 weeks. Until then the strike shall be continued.
During the day-long hearing, Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud spoke about patients waiting for hours for a few minutes of medical care in public hospitals, and bystanders spending nights on the bare floor.
He further observed that “Judges cannot give justice standing outside the court complex. Like that, doctors cannot treat patients outside hospitals.Justice and medicine cannot go on strike. Get back to work now,” the Chief Justice urged doctors’ associations and bodies. Following the appeal many doctors associations called off the strike.
However, TJUDA demanded a written assurance, in a statement that said “ As per the directive of the Supreme Court we demand a written assurance from the government that the basic safety and security issues across medical colleges and hospitals in Telangana. shall be addressed in 2 weeks. Until then the strike shall be continued”.
