Family of Shaik Riyaz alleges police harassment; TGHRC intervenes

HYDERABAD: The Telangana Human Rights Commission (TGHRC) on October 27 heard a fresh complaint from the family of late Shaik Riyaz, who was recently killed in a police encounter. The complainants — his mother, wife and minor children — appeared before the Commission and alleged that they were being denied access to their home and subjected to harassment and physical torture by police officials.
According to the complaint, Riyaz had been involved in certain monetary dealings with Pramod Kumar, a police constable who was also killed in the same encounter. It was alleged that Kumar had demanded ₹3 lakh from Riyaz, of which ₹30,000 had already been paid, and that fraudulent transactions had occurred between them.
Earlier, the Commission had taken suo motu cognisance of the encounter following a newspaper report (HRC No. 6745/2025) and directed the Director General of Police (DGP), Telangana, to submit a factual report by November 24.
Hearing advanced after fresh complaint
In view of the new allegations, the Commission advanced the hearing of the suo motu case to October 27 and ordered the DGP to submit a detailed factual report by November 3. It further directed that no coercive action or harassment be inflicted on any family member of the deceased Riyaz.
The order was issued by the Commission’s Public Relations Officer, reiterating that the family’s safety must be ensured while the matter remains under investigation.
