Telangana HRC orders police to protect pregnant woman

HYDERABAD: The Telangana Human Rights Commission (TGHRC) on Wednesday directed police to take immediate action to prevent an alleged forced abortion and ensure protection for a pregnant woman in a love marriage case.
The commission, headed by Justice Shameem Akther, examined a complaint filed by Mahesh on February 12, 2026.
Alleged bid to terminate four-month pregnancy
Mahesh stated that he married Bhagya in a love marriage at a temple in Yadagirigutta on January 30, 2026. He alleged that her father and brother-in-law, who opposed the marriage, tried to forcibly terminate her four-month pregnancy at a hospital near Kalwakurthy in Nagarkurnool district.
He further alleged that due to severe pressure and harassment, she attempted suicide at one stage. He also stated that police failed to register a First Information Report (FIR) or take prompt action on his complaint.
Commission terms forced abortion a serious offence
Taking serious note of the allegations, the commission observed that terminating a pregnancy without a woman’s free and voluntary consent is a serious offence under law.
It noted that causing or attempting to cause miscarriage without consent attracts penal consequences under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Invoking its powers under Section 18(c) of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, the commission directed the Sub-Divisional Police Officer, Kalwakurthy, and the Station House Officer of Vangoor police station to immediately respond to the complaint and act in accordance with law.
The Superintendent of Police, Nagarkurnool district, has been asked to monitor the matter.
The commission ordered that a detailed report be submitted by February 26, 2026. It also directed that its orders be urgently communicated to the concerned authorities.
