Govt reduces inflated cost of Telangana hospitals

HYDERABAD: The inquiry committee appointed by the Telangana government has found that the previous Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) regime had arbitrarily increased construction estimates for four major hospital projects — Warangal Super Speciality Hospital and Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences (TIMS) units at LB Nagar, Alwal and Sanathnagar — in violation of norms.
According to officials, the original estimated cost for the four hospitals was ₹3,779 crore. However, without any formal approvals, the previous government raised the figure to ₹6,714 crore — a 78% escalation.
The Warangal Super Speciality Hospital was launched in June 2021, and foundation stones for the TIMS hospitals were laid on April 26, 2022, by the then chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao.
Following criticism over the steep hike, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy ordered a forensic audit in June 2024 to investigate the increase. “How can the estimate be revised without official sanction?” Revanth reportedly asked officials during a review meeting.
Congress reverses inflated estimates
The current government has scaled back the expenditure to ₹5,001 crore, saving ₹1,713 crore in public funds.
As per the revised figures, the Warangal Super Speciality Hospital cost has been reduced from ₹2,148 crore to ₹1,528 crore, the TIMS at LB Nagar from ₹1,935 crore to ₹1,150 crore, the Alwal unit from ₹1,519 crore to ₹1,196 crore, and the Sanathnagar facility from ₹1,126 crore to ₹1,112 crore.
The cabinet recently approved the revised outlay of ₹5,001 crore for these projects.
