About Manmohan Singh
Manmohan Singh, born on September 26, 1932, in Gah (now in Pakistan), served as the 13th Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014. As the first Sikh to hold office, he was widely recognized for steering India through significant economic reforms. Manmohan Singh also became the first prime minister since Jawaharlal Nehru to be re-elected after completing a full term.
His academic background in economics shaped Manmohan Singhโs political career. After completing his doctorate at Oxford, he worked for the United Nations. He later joined the Indian government in various key roles, including Chief Economic Advisor and Governor of the Reserve Bank of India.
In 1991, as Finance Minister under Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao, Manmohan Singh led a series of bold economic reforms that helped transform Indiaโs economy and shield it from a financial crisis. His reputation as a reformist economist grew internationally, though his party, the Congress, struggled in the 1996 elections.
When the Congress-led coalition returned to power in 2004, Manmohan Singh became Prime Minister. His tenure saw significant legislative achievements, including the Right to Information Act and the National Rural Health Mission. His government also faced challenges, including opposition to the civil nuclear deal with the United States, but Manmohan Singhโs leadership during this period further solidified his place in Indian political history.
Manmohan Singh served as Prime Minister for two consecutive terms and, after stepping down in 2014, continued to serve as a member of the Rajya Sabha until his death.
Early Life and Education
Born into a Sikh family in pre-partitioned Punjab, Manmohan Singhโs early life was marked by the migration of his family to India during Partition. After schooling in Amritsar, he pursued higher education in economics at Panjab University and later at Cambridge University, where he completed his DPhil.
His academic journey laid the foundation for his career, both in academia and public service. Prior to entering politics, Manmohan Singh worked as a professor and held several key positions in the Indian government, eventually rising to national prominence as an economic advisor.
