Telangana: Telangana records the highest inflation in the country in January under the revised Consumer Price Index (CPI) series released by the Union Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.
All-India inflation stands at 2.75% in January, compared with 1.33% in December. Telangana records 4.92% inflation in January, up from 1.77% in December under the earlier base.
Base year changed, basket revised
The Centre revises the CPI base year from 2011-12 to 2023-24 to reflect changing consumption patterns amid shifting climatic conditions and consumer habits.
Items such as VCR, DVD and VCD players, radio, tape recorder, old garments, and CD/DVD/video cassettes are removed from the basket. New additions include rural housing, online media service providers, streaming services, value-added dairy products, barley and related products, pen drives, external hard disks, attendants, baby sitters and exercise equipment.
Data is collected from 1,465 rural and 1,385 urban markets across 434 towns nationwide. Prices are sourced weekly from online and e-commerce platforms.
The weightage of food and beverages, clothing and footwear, and education-related services is reduced, while that of other categories is increased.
