Telangana reports highest cybercrime cases

HYDERABAD: Telangana recorded the highest number of cybercrime cases in the country in 2024, according to the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report released on Thursday. The state registered 27,230 cybercrime cases during the year, placing it ahead of Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.

The NCRB report said cybercrime cases across the country stood at 1,01,038 in 2024. Telangana alone accounted for the highest share among all states.

Cybercrime cases rise sharply in Telangana

The report stated that Telangana registered 33,967 additional cybercrime-related complaints and cases compared to previous years. Karnataka reported 21,993 cybercrime cases, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 11,073 and Maharashtra with 9,922 cases.

The NCRB data also showed that overall crime registration across the country declined by six per cent in 2024 compared to 2023. Nationwide, 30,85,867 cases were registered in 2024 against 32,41,569 in 2023.

In Telangana, total crime cases increased from 2,06,009 in 2023 to 2,17,976 in 2024, an increase of 11,967 cases. The state stood seventh nationally in overall crime registration.

Kidnapping cases decline across country

The NCRB report said 96,079 kidnapping cases were registered across India in 2024, compared with 1,13,564 cases in 2023, marking a decline of 15.4 per cent.

Police traced 1,10,433 kidnapped persons during the year. Of them, 1,10,067 were found alive, while 346 were found dead.

In Telangana, 3,373 kidnapping cases were registered in 2024 compared with 3,174 in 2023.

Crimes against women remain high

The report stated that 2,44,330 cases of crimes against women and children were registered across the country in 2024.

Cruelty by husbands or relatives accounted for the highest number of cases at 1,10,227, constituting 42.3 per cent of the total. Cases related to assault against women stood at 48,103, while 29,536 cases of harassment were also registered.

The NCRB report further said four dowry death cases and 10,061 cases related to domestic violence and harassment by husbands or family members were reported during the year.

Murder cases show marginal decline

According to the report, 27,049 murder cases were registered nationwide in 2024, compared with 27,721 in 2023, reflecting a marginal decline of 2.4 per cent.

Disputes were the leading cause behind murder cases, accounting for 9,666 incidents. Personal rivalry-related murders stood at 1,616, while 1,460 murders were linked to property disputes or financial gain.

In Telangana, 454 murder cases were reported in 2024, the report added.
