Telangana HC Rejects Interim Arrest Relief for Trainee IPS Officer

HYDERABAD: The Telangana High Court has refused to grant interim protection from arrest to trainee Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Uday Krishna Reddy in a sexual harassment case. The investigation has also gathered pace after the complainant recorded her statement before police.
The complainant, a trainee IPS officer from Karnataka, recorded her statement at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA). Charminar Women Police Station Inspector Jyothsna recorded the statement under the supervision of Women’s Safety Wing Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Dr. Lavanya Nayak Jadhav.
Police first registered the case at Attapur Police Station on July 18. They later transferred it to the Hyderabad Women’s Safety Wing for further investigation.
Police question witnesses
Investigators questioned academy staff and fellow trainee IPS officers about the accused’s conduct at the academy. They are also examining witness statements and other evidence to establish the sequence of events.
Officials believe statements from academy staff and trainees could play an important role in the investigation.
The complainant accused fellow trainee IPS officer Uday Krishna Reddy of sexually harassing her, following which police registered the case.
High Court denies interim protection
Justice J. Srinivas Rao of the Telangana High Court heard Uday Krishna Reddy’s petition seeking to quash the FIR. However, the court refused to grant interim protection from arrest.
The judge directed the police to file their response. The court also declined the petitioner’s request to prevent the police from taking coercive action. The matter will come up for hearing again after the police file their counter.
Meanwhile, the Women’s Safety Wing has continued its investigation into the case.
Accused discharged from hospital
According to police, Uday Krishna Reddy went to a friend’s residence in Ameerpet on the day the FIR was registered. His family later found him unconscious.
Police recovered liquor bottles, sanitiser bottles and an alleged suicide note from the house. Based on these findings, family members suspected a suicide attempt.
Doctors admitted him to a private hospital in SR Nagar for treatment. They discharged him on Wednesday after his condition improved.
