HYDERABAD: The Telangana High Court on Thursday directed the state government to explain the denial of ambulance services to a patient for want of an Aadhaar card.

The direction came while hearing a public interest litigation challenging an earlier incident in Vikarabad district, where ambulance services were allegedly refused to a minor girl because she did not possess an Aadhaar card.

The petition was filed by para-legal volunteer K Raju, contending that emergency medical services cannot be linked to identity documents.

Bench hears PIL on emergency medical care

A division bench comprising Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice J M Mohiuddin heard the matter. Counsel for the petitioner urged the court to issue clear directions to ensure emergency medical treatment irrespective of identity proof.

Government told to file counters

The bench asked the concerned department to submit a detailed explanation and directed the government to file counter-affidavits. The matter was adjourned by two weeks.
