Telangana braces for severe heatwave as IMD issues red and orange alerts till May 21

HYDERABAD: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red and orange heatwave alerts across Telangana, warning that severe summer conditions are likely to continue till May 21.
Several districts have been placed under red alert, with temperatures expected to cross 45°C. Most other districts are under orange alert, where maximum temperatures are likely to remain between 41°C and 44°C.
A prolonged spell of dry heat has gripped the state, pushing all districts into a high-temperature zone and triggering concerns over public health and safety.
Health officials said the prevailing conditions could increase the risk of heat exhaustion, dehydration and heatstroke, particularly among infants, elderly persons and people with chronic illnesses.
The Director of Public Health (DPH), in a heatwave advisory, urged people to avoid outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours. Officials advised residents to wear light cotton clothing and maintain adequate hydration by consuming water, oral rehydration solution (ORS) and traditional fluids.
