In response to the ongoing heatwave, the Telangana government, through the Office of the Director of Public Health and Family Welfare, has issued a public advisory to protect citizens. The advisory, issued by Dr. B. Ravinder Nayak, urges people to stay hydrated by drinking water regularly, even in the absence of thirst.
It also recommends consuming Oral Rehydration Solutions (ORS) and homemade drinks like lemon water, buttermilk, and fruit juices. Seasonal fruits and vegetables with high water content such as watermelon, muskmelon, oranges, grapes, cucumbers, and lettuce are advised to help keep the body cool.
People stepping outside are encouraged to wear light-colored, loose-fitting cotton clothing and to protect their heads with a hat, towel, or umbrella. Wearing footwear is important to avoid burns from hot surfaces. Outdoor activities should be limited to early mornings and evenings.
At home, windows and curtains should remain closed during the day, especially on the sunny side, and opened at night for ventilation. Citizens are also encouraged to stay in cool, well-ventilated spaces and to monitor weather updates through radio, television, or the IMD website at https://mausam.imd.gov.in.
The advisory also outlines precautions to avoid during the heatwave. People are asked not to go out in the sun between 12 noon and 3 p.m., when the heat is most intense. Strenuous physical activity during these hours should be avoided. Walking barefoot in the sun is discouraged.
If cooking during peak heat hours is unavoidable, proper ventilation in the kitchen is essential. Consumption of alcohol, tea, coffee, sugary and carbonated beverages should be avoided, as these can lead to dehydration. Foods that are high in protein, spicy, oily, or stale should also be avoided.
The government has also issued a warning about heat-related illnesses. Symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, hot and dry skin, high body temperature (above 40°C), headache, dizziness, fainting, muscle cramps, rapid heartbeat, shallow breathing, and confusion require immediate medical attention.
To address emergencies, special arrangements including dedicated hospital beds, intravenous fluids, essential medicines, and ORS sachets have been made available at public health facilities. Community health workers like ANMs, ASHAs, and Anganwadi workers are also prepared to assist the public during this period.
