Rainy season health alert: What Telangana residents need to know

HYDERABAD: The director of public health has urged people to take precautions after the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Hyderabad, forecast light to moderate rainfall across Telangana over the next week.
Health officials said cooler weather and higher humidity could increase seasonal illnesses. These include mosquito-borne, water-borne and airborne diseases.
Steps to prevent mosquito-borne diseases
Officials advised people to install mosquito screens, use mosquito nets and apply mosquito repellents. These measures can help prevent diseases such as malaria, dengue and chikungunya.
The health department also asked residents to remove mosquito breeding spots. People should ensure proper drainage, cover septic tanks with mesh and prevent water from collecting around their homes.
Officials urged citizens to observe a weekly Dry Day every Friday. On that day, they should empty and clean containers that can hold stagnant water.
Drink safe water and maintain hygiene
The department warned that rainy weather can increase the risk of acute gastroenteritis, jaundice and typhoid.
Officials advised people to drink boiled or filtered water and wash their hands regularly. They also asked residents to avoid food prepared in unhygienic conditions.
To reduce the spread of viral fevers and influenza, people should avoid close contact with sick individuals. They should use sanitisers often and cover their mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing.
Health officials urged anyone with flu-like symptoms to visit the nearest government health facility without delay.
The government has supplied medicines, intravenous fluids and ORS sachets to ANMs, ASHAs and Anganwadi workers. These frontline workers can provide timely support when needed.
In an emergency, citizens can call the 108 ambulance service for help.
