Telangana Govt halts Rs.100 crore donation from Adani Foundation to Young India Skills University

Hyderabad: The Telangana government on November 25, 2024, has decided to halt the transfer of a ₹100 crore donation pledged by the Adani Foundation to the Young India Skills University. The decision was announced by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy during a press conference at his residence in Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad, following major criticism from various political parties.

CM Revanth Reddy stated, “In light of the ongoing controversy, the Telangana government will not accept the donation of ₹100 crore that was proposed for the Young India Skills University. I have instructed the Adani Foundation to refrain from transferring the funds and have sent an official note to this effect.”

The controversy surrounding the donation escalated after Gautam Adani, chairman of the Adani Group, was charged in the United States with allegations of bribery and fraud. In response, Jayesh Ranjan, Special Chief Secretary to the Telangana government and Commissioner for Industrial Promotion, sent an official letter to Dr. Priti G. Adani, Chairperson of the Adani Foundation.

The letter, dated November 24, 2024, read, “Dear Dr. Priti Adani, We appreciate your commitment of ₹100 crore to the Young India Skills University as outlined in your letter dated October 18, 2024. However, we have not yet requested any donors to transfer funds, as the university has not received the necessary IT exemption under Section 80G. Although this exemption was granted recently, I have been instructed by the Hon’ble Chief Minister not to seek the transfer of funds due to the current controversies.”

On October 18, 2024, the Adani Group had pledged the ₹100 crore donation towards the establishment of the Young India Skills University in Hyderabad, as part of its commitment to support the Telangana government’s initiatives for skill development and youth empowerment. However, in light of recent situations, the state government has now decided to suspend the donation transfer.
