Telangana clears ₹1.55 crore ex gratia for Gulf workers’ families

HYDERABAD: The Telangana government has sanctioned ₹1.55 crore in ex gratia for families of Gulf workers, including 31 families from Jagtial district. Officials said the amount will be released shortly.
State disburses ₹5 lakh each to 169 bereaved families
According to officials, 169 families of migrant workers who died in Gulf countries between 2024 and 2025 have received ₹5 lakh each as ex gratia, amounting to ₹8.45 crore.
Vice-chairman of the Telangana NRI Advisory Committee Mandha Bheem Reddy said the Congress government, under chief minister A Revanth Reddy, is committed to supporting Gulf migrant workers’ families.
“So far, 165 families have benefited through the Gulf ex gratia scheme, and 100 applications are currently under process,” he said.
Telangana minister Adluri Laxman Kumar said the sanctioned amounts would be deposited directly into the recipients’ bank accounts.
Officials say 100 more applications are under review
Kalamadugu Laxmi, a resident of Dharmapuri mandal in Jagtial district and wife of Rajesh, who died while working in Saudi Arabia in November 2024, said she received the ex gratia amount.
“I was provided ₹5 lakh two months after the death of my husband,” she said.
Scheme covers deaths in seven Gulf countries since December 2023
The Telangana Gulf ex gratia scheme provides ₹5 lakh to families of residents who die while working in Gulf countries, irrespective of the cause of death. Introduced in late 2023, the scheme mandates that legal heirs apply within six months of the death with documents such as the death certificate and the deceased’s work visa.
The scheme covers deaths occurring on or after December 7, 2023, in Bahrain, Kuwait, Iraq, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
