News in short:
The Telangana government is implementing a Facial Recognition System (FRS) in all government junior colleges starting in the 2025-26 academic year. This system aims to improve student attendance, which currently stands at only 60% across the state's 435 junior colleges. The FRS will automatically record student attendance, allowing the department to monitor absenteeism and notify parents of students who miss classes for four to five consecutive days. The initiative comes as the government also aims to increase student enrollment in these colleges, which currently have a total of 288,310 seats available. Officials are aiming for an admission rate exceeding 60%.

Hyderabad: The Government junior colleges will soon introduce the Facial Recognition System (FRS) to record the attendance of students from the next academic year 2025-26.

The Intermediate Education Department has decided to adopt this novel system to record the attendance as it will prove effective in monitoring students’ attendance across the junior colleges in Telangana.

According to S Krishna Aditya, Director of Intermediate Education, the attendance captured through FRS will help them address the absenteeism among the students. He said the department is taking measures to improve the students’ attendance percentage in the colleges. The concerned college management would notify the parents if their wards fail to show up for classes for four to five consecutive days.

Nearly 1.6 lakh students are enrolled both in first and second year across 435 junior colleges in the state this year. However, only 60 percent of students are attending the classes, according to recent inspections conducted by the education department officials. Junior colleges in Kamareddy, Adilabad, Asifabad, Sircilla, and Karimnagar districts were found to be low on students’ attendance.

Currently, the biometric system is in place for the teaching faculty in government junior colleges. However, the department is planning to roll out the new tech-driven roll call for everyone in the college including the junior lecturers. The FRS devices will be installed at the junior colleges before the start of next academic year.

The officials are also keen on increasing the intake in these colleges. There are a total of 2,88,310 seats, including 1,44,460 in first year and 1,43,850 in second year in the government junior colleges and the colleges have been instructed to improve the admission percentage to over and above 60.
