HYDERABAD: The Telangana Governor has approved the Telangana Platform-Based Gig Workers 2026 Bill, offering legal backing to the rights of gig workers across the state. The government is set to issue the gazette notification on Friday, May 1, marking May Day.

Lakhs of gig workers, including delivery personnel and cab drivers, are expected to benefit. The law aims to address low wages, work pressure and the absence of social security.

Guidelines to be issued within 10–15 days

The law seeks to ensure job security, accident and health insurance, and access to welfare schemes for workers employed by app-based aggregators.

Labour department officials will hold a special meeting with aggregators such as Swiggy, Zomato, Ola and Uber, along with gig workers’ unions. The meeting will discuss working hours, grievance redress mechanisms and a welfare fund.

Arrangements are being made following directions from Labour Minister Vivek Venkataswamy. Officials said detailed guidelines are likely within 10 to 15 days.

Analysts said the law could bring structural changes to the gig economy. It is expected to regulate company practices and mandate that a portion of service charges collected from workers be allocated to a welfare fund.
