Telangana Gig Workers Strike From Aug 8: 4 Lakh Drivers, Delivery Workers to Go Off Roads
HYDERABAD: App-based cab drivers, auto drivers, goods transport operators and delivery workers across Telangana will go on an indefinite strike from August 8. The strike could affect app-based transport and delivery services across the state.
The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union announced the strike after a flash protest last Wednesday. Union leaders said nearly four lakh gig and platform workers are likely to join the protest.
The union has urged the state government and platform companies to hold immediate talks. Workers are demanding fair earnings, social security, transparent policies and better working conditions.
Drivers demand fare revision
The unions want a minimum base fare and a revision of per-kilometre and per-minute charges. They have asked companies to discuss the fare structure with driver representatives.
Workers are also seeking transparency in platform algorithms. They want clear details on fare calculations, incentives, penalties and account suspension rules.
The unions claimed that high aggregator commissions are cutting into drivers’ earnings. They demanded a cap on platform charges.
Gig workers seek welfare benefits
The unions have demanded health and accident insurance, pension, maternity benefits and access to government welfare schemes for gig workers.
They also urged the government to take action against unauthorised vendors and commercial vehicles registered in other states. Workers said such operations are affecting local drivers.
The union has also demanded immediate implementation of the Gig and Platform Workers Rules and the creation of a Welfare Board.
Union representatives said the strike will continue until the demands are addressed. Workers associated with Ola, Uber, Rapido, Swiggy, Zomato, Zepto and Blinkit are expected to participate.
