Proposed mega freight wagon overhauling facility of South Central Railway in Warangal region, Telangana

HYDERABAD: Telangana will soon get its first-ever mega freight examination facility for periodic overhauling (POH) and routine overhauling (ROH) of goods wagons, giving a major boost to railway infrastructure in the State.

The facility, the first of its kind in Telangana, will come up in the Warangal region. The project will further strengthen Warangal’s position as a key railway hub. After hosting a railway manufacturing unit, the district will now house this mega freight facility. The unit will handle maintenance, repair and overhauling of goods wagons and related railway components.

Comprehensive wagon inspection hub

The specialised railway unit will conduct detailed inspections of goods wagons after the completion of a fixed service cycle. Unlike routine maintenance carried out at ROH facilities in Ramagundam, Bellampally and Kazipet, the proposed POH unit will handle complete dismantling and reassembly of wagons.

This process will help ensure long-term safety, reliability and operational efficiency. During periodic overhauling, officials withdraw wagons from commercial service and subject them to extensive technical checks and refurbishments.

Land identification under way

According to South Central Railway (SCR), officials have begun identifying a suitable site between the Kazipet and Mahabubabad sections. The project will cost an estimated ₹1,000 crore and require about 200 to 300 acres of land.

Currently, Telangana sends its goods wagons to the POH facility at Rayanapadu in Andhra Pradesh. This practice increases turnaround time and operational costs. The new unit will reduce logistical delays, improve wagon availability and support freight traffic moving through the State.

“With industrial growth gaining momentum in Telangana, especially in cement, coal, steel, food grains and container traffic, the need for a dedicated wagon overhauling facility has become critical,” a senior SCR official said. The official added that the POH unit would generate large-scale employment, including skilled and semi-skilled jobs.

Officials said SCR will prepare a detailed project report after finalising the land. The project will then move to statutory approvals and tendering. SCR plans to take up construction in phases, and the facility is expected to become operational within three to five years.
