Listen to Story

Hyderabad: The Telangana Excise Department has planned to deploy 30 to 40 special teams across the GHMC limits to monitor the use of non-duty paid liquor and drugs during the upcoming New Year celebrations. The department will focus on preventing the import and consumption of liquor from unauthorised sources.

Special vigilance teams have been instructed to take action against anyone found using non-duty paid liquor or drugs during the celebrations. Strict measures will be enforced against those found consuming narcotics, including cocaine, MDMA, LSD, marijuana, hashish oil, and other intoxicating substances. The accused will be charged under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

The Excise Department has provided special drug detection kits to inspection teams to assist with these efforts. Suspected individuals will be tested, and legal cases will be filed if the results are positive.

Inspections will be conducted in areas where authorised liquor consumption is permitted for New Year events, including pubs and bars. Any use of non-duty paid liquor or drugs will result in legal action. There will also be a focus on the transport of illicit liquor and drugs brought in from other states, especially from places like Bangalore, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Delhi, Punjab, and Haryana.

Raids will be carried out in areas known for the illegal sale of drugs, such as Nanakramguda, Dhoolpet, and other parts of Hyderabad under the GHMC limits. These efforts will continue to be intensified through December 31, 2024.

V.B. Kamalasan Reddy, Director of Enforcement, Prohibition, and Excise, stated that the department is closely monitoring the situation and will take strict action against anyone violating the law during the New Year celebrations.
