Excise Department earns ₹2,863 crore from liquor applications

HYDERABAD: The Telangana Excise Department has earned nearly ₹2,863 crore from applications for liquor and wine shop licences, bringing it close to its ₹3,000-crore revenue target. The application process closed on October 23, with 95,436 applications for liquor shops and 95,285 for wine shops filed across the state.
According to officials, the department’s income is ₹218 crore higher than in the previous round. The last allotment generated ₹2,645 crore from around 1.32 lakh applications. Though the total number of applicants fell this time, the application fee was increased from ₹2 lakh to ₹3 lakh, helping the department maintain its revenue target.
Government earns ₹2,858 crore from wine shop applications
Applications for wine shop licences alone contributed ₹2,858 crore to the state’s revenue. This figure is ₹36 crore higher compared to the previous round, officials said.
The Excise Department had issued the notification on September 25, and applications were accepted from the next day.
Deadline extended amid BC bandh
By midnight of October 18, about 89,344 people had submitted applications. However, due to the BC bandh on the same day, several traders could not apply. Following their requests, the department extended the deadline to October 23, offering relief to applicants.
The selection of traders will be conducted through a lottery system on October 27.
Shamshabad tops, Asifabad lowest
The Shamshabad Excise Division received the highest number of liquor shop applications at 8,502, followed by Saroor Nagar (7,850), Medchal (5,958), and Malkajgiri (5,127).
Kumram Bheem Asifabad registered the lowest number with 667 applications. Vanaparthy received 757, Adilabad 748, Jogulamba Gadwal 800, Jagtial 1,956, Karimnagar 2,740, Rajanna-Sircilla 1,380, Sangareddy 4,390, and Suryapet 2,770 applications.
