HYDERABAD: Telangana will conduct a comprehensive door-to-door census of dogs across all gram panchayats, marking the first such exercise in the country.

The Panchayat Raj and Rural Development Department on Wednesday directed all district collectors to ensure enumeration of all categories of dogs. Panchayat secretaries will carry out the survey by visiting households and collecting detailed data.

Officials said the collected data will be uploaded on the central government website through the e-Panchayat platform. A dedicated module under the gram panchayat login will be used for recording dog census details. The department has termed the exercise urgent and mandatory.

Panchayat secretaries to collect and upload dog data

Secretaries have begun fieldwork to gather complete information on dogs in each village, including domestic and stray animals. The department has instructed that no data gaps should remain during entry into the system.

Exercise follows Supreme Court directives on stray control

The move follows directions linked to control of stray dog menace, dog bites and population regulation. A state-level committee was earlier constituted in line with Supreme Court guidelines. The latest orders on dog census have been issued based on the committee’s recommendations.
