Telangana Issues Show Cause Notices To 14 Nursing Colleges

HYDERABAD: The Directorate of Medical Education (Academic) has issued show-cause notices to 14 nursing institutions in Telangana for violating regulatory norms. The colleges have been directed to respond within a week.

During inspections, officials found that seven colleges were functioning from locations different from those approved by the government at the time of licensing. Another seven nursing schools reportedly lacked minimum infrastructure and adequate teaching staff as mandated by the Indian Nursing Council (INC).

Medical education wing recommends action to government

Sources said the Directorate of Medical Education (DME) submitted a report to the state government recommending cancellation of recognition for institutions failing to meet INC norms.

The health department had received multiple complaints over the past few months regarding irregularities in nursing colleges and schools across the state. In response, Health Minister Damodar Rajanarasimha directed officials to initiate inspections.

Inspections across four districts reveal irregularities

Teams under the supervision of the Nursing Council inspected institutions in Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, Medchal and Nalgonda districts. Officials examined whether the schools were operating at approved locations, whether faculty strength met INC standards, and if basic facilities were available.

A total of 23 nursing schools were inspected following complaints. Each institution was checked by a two-member team — 46 officers in all — over two days. Based on their findings, the DME (Academic) submitted a detailed report to the government, recommending appropriate action against erring institutions.

“The inspections covered all aspects, including infrastructure, faculty and compliance with INC guidelines. Colleges not adhering to norms will face action,” an official said.
