GHMC split: Cyberabad, Malkajgiri Municipal Corporations formed in major Telangana urban reform

HYDERABAD: The Telangana Government has ordered the division of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) into three municipal corporations to enhance urban governance. This change, detailed in G.O.Ms.No.55, is part of the Core Urban Region (CURE) reorganisation plan.
According to the notification, the new municipal corporations are, Cyberabad Municipal Corporation, covering Serilingampally, Kukatpally, and Qutbullapur zones; Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation, covering Malkajgiri, Uppal, and L.B. Nagar zones, and the retained Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, which will govern Shamshabad, Rajendernagar, Charminar, Golconda, Khairatabad, and Secunderabad zones.
Each corporation will operate as an independent body corporate under the GHMC Act, 1955. The government stated this decision followed a careful review of administrative needs from the city’s expansion.
Concurrent IAS reshuffle
Simultaneously, the General Administration Department issued a separate Government Order for high-level transfers and postings of Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers to implement the new structure and fill key vacancies.
Key appointments include G. Srijana, IAS (2013) as the first Commissioner of Cyberabad Municipal Corporation. T. Vinay Krishna Reddy, IAS (2013), will be the first Commissioner of Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation. R.V. Karnan, IAS (2012), will continue as Commissioner of the reorganized Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation(GHMC).
