Police Vehicles Registered Under Telangana Dgp Owe Rs. 68.6 Lakh In Traffic Fines, Rti Reveals

Hyderabad: A Right to Information (RTI) query has revealed that vehicles registered under the Telangana Director General of Police (DGP) have accumulated unpaid traffic fines amounting to ₹68,67,885. The information was disclosed in response to an RTI application submitted on March 17, 2025, and received by the Hyderabad Traffic Police on March 20, 2025.

According to the RTI response, a total of 17,391 challans are pending against police vehicles registered under the DGP’s office.

The matter was highlighted by traffic safety activist Lokendra Singh, known by his handle @HYDTrafficMan on ‘X’ (formerly Twitter). In his post, he stated, “Fines worth ₹68,67,885 are pending for police vehicles registered under @TelanganaDGP, reveals RTI response. It really sets a bad example for the public. I respect traffic police a lot. Also, I truly believe in the spirit of transparency and accountability of law enforcement authorities. If authorities don’t practice what is being preached, then the purpose of serving is defeated.”

Lokendra Singh further noted that such violations fall under Section 199 of the Motor Vehicles Act, which addresses offences committed without the knowledge of the vehicle owner. He urged the DGP and relevant commissioners to ensure that fines are recovered from the individual drivers responsible and to take measures to prevent such violations in the future.

Speaking with the Hyderabad Mail, Lokendra Singh clarified that he had not specified any particular year in his RTI request and that the figures provided reflect the total number of pending challans and the cumulative outstanding amount as of the date of the response.

Citizens also reacted strongly to the revelation. Ritesh Kumar said, “This is one of the main reasons traffic violators don’t fear the administration. The challans go unpaid. The day authorities start seizing vehicles and licences for non-payment, things will change.”

Another citizen, Naresh, commented, “This is totally unacceptable. ₹68 lakhs?! What kind of drivers are these?”

The RTI was filed with the Hyderabad Traffic Branch requesting details about various traffic-related data points within the Commissionerate’s jurisdiction.

The response has raised concerns about accountability within law enforcement and calls for stricter enforcement of traffic rules, even among government vehicles.
