Telangana DCA raids Hyderabad gyms for illegal sale of steroids, Mephentermine
HYDERABAD: The Drugs Control Administration (DCA), Telangana, conducted a special drive on October 24, 2025, to detect illegal stocking and sale of anabolic-androgenic steroids and cardiac stimulants such as Mephentermine Sulphate Injection in city gyms.
Officials, in coordination with local police, carried out surprise inspections at 20 gyms located in Secunderabad, Mehdipatnam, Tolichowki, Malakpet, Punjagutta, Narsingi, Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Madhapur, Kothapet, Kukatpally, and Suraram.
Abuse of steroids poses serious health risks
According to DCA officials, anabolic-androgenic steroids, often misused by bodybuilders to enhance muscle growth, can cause cardiovascular problems, liver damage, mood swings, hormonal imbalance, and long-term complications such as infertility and psychiatric disorders.
Mephentermine Sulphate Injection, a cardiac stimulant prescribed to treat hypotension during spinal anaesthesia, is also being misused by some gym-goers to enhance endurance and physical performance.
Strict action warned under Drugs and Cosmetics Act
The DCA cautioned that any gym found stocking or selling prescription medicines illegally would face legal action under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, which provides for imprisonment of up to five years.
Director General Shahnawaz Qasim, IPS, urged gym owners and staff to refrain from such unlawful practices and ensure full compliance with the law. The public can report illegal drug activities or suspicious manufacturing of narcotic and psychotropic substances through the DCA’s toll-free number 1800-599-6969 operational from 10.30 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. on all working days.
