HYDERABAD: Telangana Director General of Police B Shivadhar Reddy reported notable progress in reducing violent and property crimes in 2025, while acknowledging ongoing challenges in suicide, cybercrime, and narcotics enforcement.

The overall crime rate in the state declined by 2.33% this year, with registered cases dropping from 2,34,158 to 2,28,695. Riots and disturbances decreased by 42.59%, from 324 to 186 cases, marking a five-year low. DGP said, “This a key indicator of stable and effective law and order”.

The data show significant reductions in serious crimes. Murders decreased by 8.76%, and murders for gain fell by 15.66%. Rape cases dropped by 13.45%. The state also recorded five-year lows for dowry-related murders (22 cases) and dowry deaths (127 cases).

Conviction rates rise, tougher sentences awarded

The conviction rate increased to 38.72%, up from 35.63% last year, reflecting stronger investigations and prosecutions. Courts issued four death sentences and sentenced 320 individuals to life imprisonment in 216 cases. Under the POCSO Act, 154 offenders in 141 cases received life imprisonment, with three also receiving the death penalty.

Despite positive trends, some areas remain concerning. Suicides increased by 24%, which the police are addressing through new mental health initiatives for personnel. Criminal breach of trust cases, often involving financial fraud among acquaintances, rose by 23%.

Cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act increased by 30%. Police attribute this to enhanced operations by the new EAGLE bureau, which seized drugs worth Rs 173 crore this year. Further DGP B Shivadhar Reddy, “They are going to places where these activities were previously undetected,” indicating a crackdown on interstate drug networks.

The cybercrime landscape is mixed. Registered cybercrime incidents in Telangana decreased by 3%, compared to a 41% national increase, but the financial sophistication of these crimes is rising. The Cyber Security Bureau reported a 23% increase in assets recovered from cyber fraudsters, totalling Rs 246 crore this year. Of this, a national high of Rs 159 crore was returned to 25,500 victims.

In road safety, accidents increased by 5.68%, but deaths fell by about 8% (537 fewer lives lost), and injuries decreased by 32% (6,896 fewer people). Police attribute this to widespread first-aid training for local shopkeepers and hotel owners along highways, who have provided immediate assistance at accident sites.

The annual report shows a rise in NDPS cases. It also notes that financial recoveries from cyber fraud reflect a shift towards targeted, intelligence-led policing against organized and financial crime.
