Congress vs BJP in Telangana: 1,000-day govt milestone sparks political war
HYDERABAD: Telangana’s Congress government has completed 1,000 days in office. Civil Supplies Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy highlighted its welfare and development initiatives and said it had restored the state’s “democratic spirit”.
Reddy said the government had brought governance closer to people through Praja Vani, gram sabhas and direct consultations. He accused the previous BRS government of concentrating power within one family and weakening democratic institutions.
Welfare schemes, farm loan waiver drive govt pitch
Reddy highlighted free bus travel for women, up to 200 units of free power under Gruha Jyothi, ₹500 LPG cylinders and ₹10 lakh coverage under Rajiv Aarogyasri.
He said 3.42 crore people receive six kg of fine rice free every month. He also cited ₹5 lakh assistance under the Indiramma housing scheme.
For farmers, Reddy said the government had waived crop loans of up to ₹2 lakh for nearly 25 lakh farmers. He said Rythu Bharosa support had also increased to ₹12,000 per acre.
Reddy said the government had filled nearly 70,000 government jobs. Recent government figures put the number above 72,000.
He also cited work in skills, education, irrigation, roads and urban infrastructure. The government has presented the caste census and SC classification as steps towards social justice.
Government figures also show ₹1.68 lakh crore spent on agriculture and farmer welfare over the past 32 months.
BJP calls CURE Act a ‘curse’ for families
Telangana BJP president N Ramchander Rao attacked the Congress government over its policies. He alleged that they were increasing the financial burden on people in Hyderabad.
Rao said the proposed Core Urban Region (CURE) Act would become a “curse” for poor and middle-class families. He alleged that it could bring additional taxes and charges, including separate sewerage and higher water charges.
“First came HYDRAA, under which the homes of ordinary citizens were demolished. Then came the HILT policy to shift industries away from the city,” Rao said.
He questioned the impact of the Hyderabad Industrial Lands Transformation (HILT) policy on workers dependent on industrial jobs.
Rao also accused the Congress government of failing to control the drug menace in Telangana. He alleged that the government was favouring the chief minister and his family.
“Under the BRS rule, KCR and his family were happy while the people suffered. Today, Revanth Reddy and his brothers are happy, but not the people of Telangana,” he said.
Rao claimed that farmers, students, government employees and retirees were dissatisfied with the government. He said people were looking towards the BJP as an alternative.
He also announced that the BJP would intensify protests against the Congress government in September.
Reddy said the government had inherited heavy debts and pending liabilities. Despite this, he said, it had continued welfare spending and development works.
He said Telangana had moved from “family rule to people-centric governance”. The government, he added, would continue its work with greater resolve.
