Telangana BC Commission Urges PM Modi to Include 40 Communities in Central OBC List
HYDERABAD: Telangana Backward Classes Commission chairman G Niranjan has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to expedite the inclusion of 40 Telangana communities in the Central Other Backward Classes (OBC) list.
Niranjan made the appeal in a letter to the Prime Minister. He said the Centre should resolve the issue before the Census 2027 exercise. He had also raised the matter with the Prime Minister on April 13, 2026.
Telangana BC Commission sends list to Centre
The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment had sought details of the 40 communities after receiving a representation seeking their inclusion in the Central OBC list.
The Telangana BC Commission sent the details to the Centre on July 18, 2026.
In a letter dated August 3, the ministry’s director said Article 342A of the Constitution governs the inclusion and exclusion of communities from the Central OBC list.
Niranjan said the Centre had not yet resolved the issue, even though Telangana had already included the communities in its state BC list. He said some communities entered the state list as early as 2008, while others have awaited inclusion in the Central list since then.
NCBC held hearings in 2021 and 2023
The National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) held hearings on the issue in New Delhi on two occasions, Niranjan said.
The first hearings took place from December 22 to 24, 2021. The second hearing was held on September 5, 2023.
However, Niranjan said the process under Article 342A had not reached a final decision.
He said the delay was affecting members of the 40 communities seeking OBC benefits in admissions to Central government educational institutions and recruitment to Central government services.
Niranjan urged the Prime Minister to intervene and speed up the process. He said the Centre should treat the matter as urgent so that the affected communities can access benefits available under the Central OBC framework.
