Hyderabad: The Telangana Commission for Backward Classes on February 18, 2026 said candidates from Backward Classes (BCs) secured over 61% of the seats in the recently held municipal elections across the state.

BC Commission Chairman G. Niranjan and members Rapolu Jayaprakash, Tirumalagiri Surender and Balalakshmi Rangu expressed satisfaction over the outcome. They noted that in the recent panchayat elections, BC candidates had won 52.75% of seats, including in general categories.

According to the Commission, 28.22% of municipal wards and 35.25% of wards in municipal corporations were reserved for BCs in the civic polls. Despite this, BC candidates secured 61% of the total seats, which the Commission described as a sign of growing awareness among BC communities.

Comprehensive survey cites 56.33% BC population

The Commission said a comprehensive survey conducted in the state found that BCs constitute 56.33% of the population.

It recalled that the State Government had passed a Bill in the Assembly providing 42% reservation for BCs. However, the Bill is pending approval with the Central Government.

The Commission said it was not appropriate that some individuals had approached courts seeking to prevent the implementation of the 42% reservation.

Call to include quota in 9th Schedule

Referring to the performance of BC candidates in the recent panchayat and municipal elections, the Commission urged the Central Government to grant approval for implementing 42% reservation.

It also requested that the provision be included in the Ninth Schedule of the Constitution to facilitate implementation. Further, the Commission appealed to those who had filed cases in courts against the move to withdraw them to enable smooth implementation of the 42% quota.

The statement was issued by the Chairman’s office.
