Telangana likely to buck August rainfall deficit despite strengthening El Nino
HYDERABAD: Telangana is likely to remain one of the few States to receive normal to above-normal rainfall in August despite forecasts of a nationwide rainfall deficit due to a strengthening El Nino, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The IMD’s latest extended-range forecast says Telangana and other southern States will receive normal to above-normal rainfall during the first half of August 2026. A series of low-pressure systems over the Bay of Bengal and favourable regional weather conditions will fuel the rainfall.
Telangana and coastal Andhra Pradesh lie along the usual track of Bay of Bengal weather systems. As these systems move inland, they are likely to bring widespread rain to both regions.
Dry spell to end next week
A deep depression that moved across neighbouring Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh triggered the recent spell of heavy rain in several Telangana districts. It also brought light to moderate showers to Hyderabad.
The IMD expects mostly dry weather across Hyderabad and the districts until August 5. Only isolated light showers may occur during this period.
Day temperatures will stay close to normal. They may remain up to 1.5 degrees Celsius above or below the seasonal average.
Weather models show that the southwest monsoon will revive over Telangana between August 6 and 12. The fresh spell is likely to end the brief dry phase.
Fresh Bay system to boost rainfall
A new low-pressure area may form over the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal during the middle of the week. It is likely to move inland and bring another spell of scattered to fairly widespread rain across Telangana. Most districts may receive steady rainfall.
The IMD’s long-range outlook indicates that El Nino conditions will strengthen further in the coming weeks. However, Telangana is expected to remain among the few States likely to receive normal to above-normal rainfall. Across India, August rainfall may stay below 94 per cent of the Long Period Average (LPA).
Regional rainfall outlook
The forecast points to normal to above-normal rainfall across the northern, eastern and central districts of Telangana. Western and southern districts may receive normal or slightly below-normal rainfall.
